GOP Rep. Pete King: Shutdown could last 'several weeks'

Rep. Pete King said the government shutdown could last "several weeks. "The New York Republican is working with centrist GOP lawmakers to stop the shutdown by rallying support for a "clean" government funding bill.

Senate Democrats and President Obama back that approach, but it is strongly opposed by Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

Unless there is some type of bipartisan deal soon, King said the shutdown is here to say for a while.

The former chairman of the Homeland Security Committee called the ObamaCare defunding strategy spearheaded by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) "crazy."

King believes Republicans would eventually back a clean bill without ObamaCare language but hopes it happens sooner instead of later.

"You can't have this tyranny of a Ted Cruz minority running the Republican Party," King said.
