Liberal group slams Cantor over Irene aid

A prominent liberal group is attacking House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) for maintaining that all disaster aid for Hurricane Irene be offset with spending cuts.

In a new TV ad, hammers Cantor for "abandoning families who have lost everything just to serve the GOP's extreme agenda."

"When disaster strikes, Americans come together to help rebuild," the ad says. "But Republicans like Eric Cantor are threatening to hold victims of Hurricane Irene hostage by demanding budget cuts in exchange for aid. … It's not how we do things in America."

The ad is scheduled to air on CNN and MSNBC next week.

Cantor has vowed repeatedly to provide federal help to the victims of the damage, which private insurers are estimating could hit $10 billion.

"There’s an appropriate federal role, and the monies will be there,” Cantor said Wednesday.

But the majority leader has also said he'll be pushing Congress to offset each dollar of any federal aid allocated.
