Brewer: Secure border before passing immigration bill

Brewer's comments came a day after she praised Arizona Sens. Jeff Flake and John McCain, both Republicans, for their work in crafting a bipartisan immigration reform bill.

"I think what we're seeing taking place in the Senate is a victory for Arizona," Brewer said on Sunday.

The nod from Brewer is particularly significant given her support for controversial laws her administration passed that are meant to cut down on illegal immigration.

The Senate is set to vote on whether to end debate on the bipartisan immigration reform bill Monday afternoon.

Brewer on Monday said immigration reform is probably best done through comprehensive legislation like the bill being considered in the Senate rather than a set of smaller bills, a plan favored by a number of GOP lawmakers.

"You know this is a big issue, so it probably needs a big bill, but let's hope that they read it with a fine-toothed comb," Brewer added.

"In the past, we haven't had a lot of good reason to believe that they read those great big bills so someone better be going through it with a fine-toothed comb and do it right this time. Do it right."
