Man cites Biden comment in defense on firearms charges

"I did what Joe Biden told me to do," Barton told KOIN. "I went outside and fired my shotgun in the air."

During a Google Hangout amid the Senate debate on a new gun control bill, Biden suggested that so-called assault weapons or firearms with expanded clips were not necessary for self-protection.

"If you want to protect yourself, get a double-barreled shotgun," he said.

The vice president said he had advised his wife to use the shotgun as a deterrent.

"If there's ever a problem just walk out on the balcony here ... put that double-barreled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house," Biden said.

Barton claims he discharged the shotgun because he believed people were attempting to break into his car. Police say that attendees at a large party nearby did not enter his property.
