WATCH: VA ‘broken in capital letters’ says GOP lawmaker

The Veterans Affairs (VA) Department is broken and Secretary David Shulkin or his successor must cut the “bloat” from the agency, says Rep. Steve Russell (R-Okla.).

“I have strong opinions on how broken the VA is, and we can we can put lipstick on that pig and talk about how wonderful it is and all the great things they do, but it’s broken in capital letters,” Russell said in an interview with The Hill.

Russell backs partially privatizing veterans health care, which would be a controversial move.

Senate Veterans Affairs Committee ranking member Jon Tester (D-Mont.) told The Hill that if Shulkin is fired by President Trump, he would vote against any successor who wants to privatize the VA.
